Rare 1931 Duesenberg Coming to Klingberg Auto Show
October 2, 2008 A rare 1931 Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster will be leading off the Big Classics Display at the Klingberg Antique
Auto Show. Presented by Johnny Pascucci of Johnny Pascucci’s Classic Cars, this particular vehicle has not been seen by the public in 25 years. Delivered to its first owner B. Hallahan, December 20, 1931, this extravagant American automobile was made for the very wealthy during the Great Depression. Actor Gary Cooper, as one who could afford it, purchased his in 1930. Some of the most talented and creative automobile designers of the time, created what is now one of the most coveted and costly US-built classic cars of all time. Last year, one of these Derham Toursters, part of the John McMullen Collection, sold at auction for $1.35 million; it’s a Duccy!
For those who enjoy the more technical description of this incredible automobile, here are some facts. The engine is a
straight 8, overhead configuration actuated by duel overhead camshafts, four values per cylinder, 3 ¾ X 4 ½ bore and stroke, with 265 horsepower, 320 with the supercharge option. The wheelbase is 153 ½ inches long. The transmission is three speeds forward and one reverse. It was 100 horsepower greater than its closest rival, the V16 Cadillac and almost seven times the horsepower of common Model A Ford. It cost 2 ½ times the sticker price of the most expensive Packard.
Among the other cars already registered are a 1929 Packard Phaeton, 1930 Pierce-Arrow and a 1921 Rolls-Royce.
